Komtur’s journey began in the 1960s with the opening of Komtur Apotheke in Freiburg, Germany. Under the leadership of siblings Gertrud and Josef Künle, the pharmacy quickly earned a reputation for trusted care, precision, and a deep sense of responsibility to patients.

By the 1970s, Komtur had stepped into the world of clinical research, producing placebos in its own laboratory and laying the groundwork for a new chapter of innovation. As this business grew, we collaborated with Gödecke AG, making use of their facilities when needed to meet rising industry demand, while continuing to set new standards for quality, compliance, and pharmaceutical craftsmanship.

The HIV epidemic of the 1980s marked one of the most urgent crises in modern healthcare. Komtur responded with agility and purpose, supporting clinical trials and compassionate use programs that delivered critical HIV treatments to patients in need.

By enabling secure supply chains, managing time-sensitive logistics, and guiding partners through complex regulatory environments, Komtur strengthened its role as a trusted partner in pharmaceutical access solutions.

The 1990s marked Komtur’s transformation from a local pharmacy into a global pharmaceutical partner.

• In 1996, Komtur Pharmaceuticals was officially established as a licensed pharmaceutical wholesaler, expanding the company’s focus beyond pharmacy operations to include clinical trial supply, comparator sourcing, and individual import solutions.

• By 1997, Komtur was supporting major international clinical trials, supplying critical materials for the development of statin therapies, breakthroughs that transformed the treatment of cholesterol and cardiovascular disease.

• By the end of the decade, Komtur had firmly established its reputation for reliability, scale, and excellence in large, high-impact clinical research programs.
