Komtur the Gene Genie

How we did it

For families in Slovakia, accessing this gene therapy had meant traveling abroad. In 2020, a donation program in the United States offered the opportunity for a child to receive treatment at a hospital closer to home.

The medicine was available. Now we had to get it there.

This was a therapy that had never been used in the country before. Delivering it required coordination between the manufacturer, customs authorities, legal advisors and the hospital treatment team, alongside the special transport conditions needed to protect the product.

Komtur Slovakia led the delivery process, bringing those parties together and coordinating the requirements from collection in the United States through to handover at the hospital pharmacy.

The hospital’s clinical team was responsible for treatment. Our job was to make sure the medicine reached them in the condition required and that the supply arrangements supported their preparations.

The delivery was successful. Our team remained involved through to administration, helping the hospital navigate an unfamiliar supply process.

That first delivery opened the way for others. Komtur Slovakia subsequently supplied the therapy for two more patients and became an exclusive partner of the manufacturer.

A first delivery takes more than a transport booking. It takes people who can connect an international supply route with the requirements of the hospital receiving it.
